FrY RESOLVE A PROBLEM
One of the first farmers to agree to the buffer strip fencing along the river Yarrow approached FrY with an unforeseen problem regarding the watering of young livestock. The need for them to be placed temporarily in various fields where they would normally have had access to water from the river, now unavailable due to the fencing, has resulted in having to use mains water to fill temporary troughs. As this water is metered, it is very expensive for the farmer. Rather than removing fencing, FrY suggested that a portable watering system could be used to take water from the river and through the fencing. A number of systems were considered including pressure pumps using walk-on mats and nose activated pumps that calves learn to operate . However, FrY decided upon a solar powered pump. Thanks to a grant from Lancashire County Council, a company called Winsund international Ltd were contacted to design a purpose built proto-type pump. The pump was installed in time for the new stock of calves and is proving to be a great success. This environmentally friendly and cost effective solution means that the achievements we have reached with the buffer strip fencing can continue to bring results, yet meeting the needs of both farmers and environmentalists.
